Being seen at your desk

I worked remotely long before it was fashionable. Deliverables from cafes, meetings across time zones, one client in Alaska I served from the Philippines with a workday that started at midnight. Most clients didn’t notice where I was until I posted a photo. The work arrived on time and that was the whole arrangement.

So I’ve never believed that sitting somewhere visible proves anything. I’ve watched people commute an hour to scroll Instagram at a desk, and I’ve watched distributed teams accomplish enormous amounts because they trusted each other and kept their commitments. The difference was never the building.

What makes any of it work is trust, and trust gets earned one way: deliver. Be reachable when you said you’d be reachable. Meet the deadline. Don’t half-ass a day and call it flexibility. Every person who goes unreachable while working from home hands ammunition to every manager who wanted an excuse to distrust the rest of us.

I do better work with my own coffee, my own hours, and no traffic in my morning. Other people need the energy of an office, and that’s a real need too. The point was never the location. Output can be measured. Attendance just gets watched.
