Documentation is a map of what is. Optimization is a decision about what should be.

From recent conversations with other HR leaders, organizations routinely treat them as the same thing, then wonder why the new system or automation didn’t fix anything.

Writing down a broken process just gives you a very clear record of what’s broken. The tool inherited the problem. It automated the wrong thing.
